I prayed that someone would claim her. Then I tried to give her away. No such luck. For the first month she wouldn’t come into the house or anywhere near me. She lived up in the woods and came down only to eat. I don’t know how long she had been on the road. I picture her like a swagman with a little kerchief tied on a stick over her shoulder.

After a week of seeing us every day, Jesse began to warm up, and although she was still timid, she seemed happy to see us. We were touched and flattered. J Our old dog, Tim, had just died at the age of eighteen. He was a stray we found wandering on the streets of Manhattan. We knew that we didn’t want a puppy because the kids were so young, but we did want another dog at some point, though perhaps not so soon after Tim’s death. Dakota and I have been on TV many times, including on the Discovery Channel and Odyssey. We work hard to teach people about service dogs. Dakota’s life has changed a lot since that day when he was abandoned, and mine certainly has changed, too.
